Unit 4 - Pre-Production Portfolio

Pre-Production

When working on a film project, it is important to plan it out through a pre-production stage. This is to manage the financing budget, shooting schedules for the cast and crew; along with other essential pre-production elements. These essentials including:

1. Finances/Budget
2. Cast and Crew
3. Location (green screen, foley studio, etc)
4. Scripts and Storyboards
5. Editor
6. Health and Safety

All of these contribute to how well a film turns out. If people are working on a film without any knowledge of how to proceed in the production stages, it often guarantees a film a will fail financially and critically.

Financing/Budget

In a time of producing a film, a budget has to be implemented in the production in order for suitable financing on certain items required for a film production. A budget can vary; if an independent film is being made, it is quite common to start crowdfunding or rely on self-financing to produce your movie, which allows for creative freedom. If you are working for a studio, they'll set a budget given to the director and producer; this will influence the production on how it proceeds.

Planning

The conception of the shooting schedule is a priority to be considered in regards to what shots, angles and positions the cameras are placed as well as the direction given to actors. A script or screenplay is one of the starting elements in this stage; with the storyboard to provide a key visual of individual shots and what types they need to be and the order you film them in. The last thing is to schedule a filming date for certain shots to be filmed upon schedule

Logistics

You have to think on managing and securing locations with permits, as well as insuring the production in case of any damages or accidents. Consideration of the cast and crew is important for how the production goes, that every one involved in the project is treated equally and kept from any harm within sets.

Facilities

Aside from filming footage, you need to find your resources that you require. For starters, you may wish to rent a green screen studio for scenes that either utilize special effects or for a visual inclusion of a location. Props and items are something you will need for your production, so it is ideal you look for them in prop locations that provide what you need. If you want to add sound in during post-production, it is best to find a foley studio to gain different sources of sound effects for you film production.
